The quality mechanism as a basis

Garage space is an absolute necessity and an integral element of modern housing, especially garage doors. Regardless of whether it is a house or a building, whether the owner owns a car or not, every modern architect will be obliged to envisage that a part of a residential building or a separate building in the yard is reserved for a garage or garages. Of course, the idea of building a garage as such is nothing new, but it is a new approach of designers when it comes to this addition to your home.

All major cities are tormented by chronic overcrowding and in such circumstances, there is always a lack of space to live, and today’s man never has enough space. Knowing this, following the example from around the world, within all residential buildings from new construction where there were field opportunities there is an underground shared garage, and this fact is stated in the description of the property as a convenience that also dictates its price.

In addition to being a basic car parking space, a garage is a welcome extra space for those who don’t have this means of transportation to store things that make the apartment crowded. Also, the logic is that if you do not have a car at the moment it does not mean that you will not have it in the future and then you will inevitably need a garage, which is assumed to be within easy reach of a residential unit, within the same building.

The same principle applies to houses where it is built from scratch or adaptation allows it, and alternatively, where it is not convenient to subtract from the living space, it is built especially in a suitable place. Whether it is a garage with an external or internal entrance, each must have a quality garage door, typically adapted to the dimensions of the space and the taste of the investor or owner.

Like the industrial ones, the first garage doors had a steel construction and a sheet steel wing, and they were opened manually by means of a handle or a fixed handle, a little later by mechanical opening upwards by means of a lever or by winding by means of a gear system.

Garage door

Garage doors are in fact a subspecies of industrial ones, which can be seen not only by the material of construction but also by the applied operating system: although some attempts and indications were made during the Second World War, the key change occurred only in the last two decades of the 20th century. the gradual introduction of automation, ie remote opening, and closing system by transmitting and receiving radio signals on a certain frequency.

That system in the first phase involved starting with a control panel installed on the outside wall of the garage where you had to get out of the vehicle to open it, and somewhere from the 90s a variant with remote control. The system with a conventional remote based on a radio connection is a classic of automation that is still in use today, only it has been perfected over the years.

Modern garage doors are all fully automated (the option of a mechanical start-up is left only as a backup for situations when the power goes out), and in some cases digitalized, where the role of remote control is played by a “smartphone” or tablet with the appropriate mobile application. the radio signal uses a wireless BlueTooth connection. Mechanical garage doors are a thing of the past even in our market, where automation arrived late.

They are, however, a convenient example for us to see unequivocally how much the quality of drive components (analog and digital) affects the overall quality of the garage door. No matter how nice it looked and fitted perfectly with the facade or the rest of the exterior, if they often get stuck and break down, then your garage door has failed in its primary role and does not justify the investment. If you are afraid of making a mistake when buying, you will best protect yourself from it if you stick to the most famous manufacturers behind tradition and brand, and manage the conditions at the installation site, leaving your aesthetic preferences as the third most important factor.

For a patio garage or an integrated garage with an external entrance that is often used and positionally exposed to the weather, segmented garage doors are a good choice. The segmented garage door is conceptually identical to the industrial one, with a folding wing composed of several parts that, when opened, stack on top of each other and are placed along the beam above the entrance or gradually extend along with the accompanying ceiling. From the installation angle, the type of garage door that best adapts to the conditions (or rather non-conditions of installation) is segmented, because thanks to the possibility of changing the number of segments and the way the wings are folded, subsequent adaptation is feasible.

The lower edge of the sash and frame is equipped with a 4 cm high plastic foot that protects the garage door from corrosion caused by exposure to atmospheric and atmospheric water (rain, snow, frost, salt), and the joint between the upper edge of the garage door and the beam, where it can often remain slightly empty. space is covered and protected by a wing-colored mask.

Aesthetic solutions include doors with cassettes and ducts, which can be partially glazed with square elements if desired. Segmented garage doors also have one subtype intended for special installation conditions, and these are side doors that have vertical segments instead of horizontal ones. The principle of operation is the same, except that the side segments instead of along the ceiling fit along the left or right wall, which is ideal for garages with a sloping roof or situations where the ceiling for any reason should remain free.

If you have a garage with a low ceiling or a narrow entrance, then the right solution will be a rolling shutter. They generally do not take up any storage space because they open by vertical lifting like window shutters and are housed in a housing mounted on a beam, just above the sash.

In case the garage is extremely cramped or with a short attic beam, there is a variant of external rolling doors, with the housing mounted on the external wall. In addition to overcoming the problem of narrow space, roller doors are the only type of garage door that can be applied on sloping ground, thanks to the sloping profile that is subsequently seen on the lower edge of the sash.

The forerunner of the current garage roller doors is steel roller shutters which, like industrial roller grilles, were raised and lowered by means of a handle. Today, roller doors are made of aluminum slats, ie profiles with polyurethane filling, which allows them to work silently, and at the same time provides good thermal insulation of the space. Just like segmented doors, they can be glazed, which is good if the garage does not have another source of natural light, and they can be fitted with ventilation grilles as a source of fresh air that also prevents the appearance of mold through ventilation.

If the garage opening is large, as is the case with SUV garages (especially bulky ones of the Hammer type), it is best to opt for a hinged door. They consist of one, usually, steel panel which, when the opening command is given, rotates 90 degrees, taking a horizontal position parallel to the ceiling, and then raises all the way to the height of the beam.

Folding doors

Folding doors are the oldest type of garage door whose main drawback was that when they were open they protruded in front of the garage, so the vehicle had to stop a few meters away before you could park it. The lever system by which they operate has been improved so that during the rotation the sash is gradually retracted into the interior of the garage and the door is finally placed under the ceiling in full so that you can now approach the building only half a meter without fear of accidents.

The level of safety of use has been raised by introducing a system of multiple springs that prevents the door from falling in case of breakage of some of them, minimizing the distance between spring coils which protects even children’s fingers from pinching and adding flexible covers over the lever to reduce the possibility of inadvertent crushing. In addition to rolling shutters, which are generally known as the best-selling, boiling doors are the ones that can most often be seen in shared garages in apartment buildings.

They are chosen by customers who like monolithic doors, and the modernization of the design and the possibility of creating a personalized model has contributed a lot to the demand for this type: instead of being “doomed” to a basic steel model with convex vertical ribs made in only eight colors. only the construction is made in advance, and the client can subsequently choose the type of material, as well as whether he wants glass elements or not. From the entire offer, doors decorated with the application of additional effects and textures, which can even imitate the facade of the building, are particularly attractive.
